London reports Boers quitting positions on British territory and drawing back to defend their own. General Roberts advances toward Bloemfontein while Cronje's fate remains uncertain. Casualties noted include Captain Burney and 13 men, with additional wounded.
Kimberley reports a heliograph from Modder River on February 14 states the country is free around Kimberley. The Tigers evacuated Dronfield Sult in Spyfontein and Sehlotzg Nek. A twelve pounder and its ammunition were captured and a lancer at Dronfield abandoned Friday night. News says tents are moving toward the Medhler River and several cattle herds have been captured. Rhodes is in excellent spirits.
Secretary of the Treasury L J Gage spoke on The Outlook at a Feb 20 dinner for the National Association of Vernon and Travelers. Over 290 members attended with no formal program. The speech, the only formal address, will be summarized in a table on page 6.
In Industrial hall Philadelphia on February 20 Tim Callahan and Eddy Lenny fought six rounds in a weight class contest. Under state law no decision in prize fights can be given, but Callahan appeared to have the better of the bout.
Marechal Patrice Maurice MacMahon's widow the Duchess of Magenta died yesterday at her Rue de Bellechasse residence after a brief illness. She was 71 years old.
Chicago report notes Oscar Gardner known as the Omaha Kid and Tommy White boxed six fast rounds to a draw. Gardner did most of the rushing while White kept him at arm's length and neither fighter sustained heavy punishment.
In London on February 20 the Liberal MP for Merthyr Tydvil urged reopening the Jameson raid inquiry. He accused the prior probe of being a farce and cited new correspondence. Chamberlain defended the original findings and attacked the grounds for a second inquiry. The house then rejected the motion by 286 to 152.
Lincoln Neb Feb 20 The Populist national convention will meet May 9 in Sioux Falls to choose delegates based on 1902 votes for General G L Weaver or higher state results. The fusion wing endorses Bryan Caldwell and aims for a Bryan Caldwell ticket. The decision follows a split with middle of the road delegates and selects May 9 as the date with Sioux Falls chosen over Kansas City and Indianapolis.
The House of Lords tonight voted 69 to 42 against adopting an amended militia ballot act. Lord Wemiss led the rejected motion.
Washington pa Feb 20 A jury returns guilty on embracery and conspiracy charges against Lieutenant Colonel James B Streator of Washington and Major J Kay of Pittsburgh for attempting to influence a juror Frank Watson in a May quarter sessions case involving Major Hazlett. Judge Taylor imposes costs and 300 fines. bonds set at 600 each for appeal preparations.
President Samuel Gompers of the American Federation of Labor returned from Havana and Matanzas where he met with organized labor and employees. He planned to go to Washington next, stating the Havana visit was for his health and the strike of Cuban and Spanish cigarmakers had been settled to the satisfaction of all concerned.
The remains of several valorous soldiers will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery with military honors tomorrow. They died in the Cuban and Puerto Rican campaigns and their bodies were brought to port aboard the Beeford and other vessels.
Washington February 2 pension certificates dated February 6 list increases for several claimants including Thor Cameron Lenox Susquehanna Percy Denson and William H W Jones across Bradford New Albany and Blovensville. The brief notice notes varying amounts from 0 to 24 dollars with several entries partially garbled.
Boston February 2 Rev W J Brooks Ph D longtime secretary of the Protestant Episcopal diocese of Massachusetts died in his room at the Revere House today.
House debate shows the tariff measure attracting Democratic votes from Louisiana and Florida and even some Republicans. Delegates from Puerto Rico push abolition of duties while some island leaders seek statehood, but Congress resists granting citizenship or full territorial rights.

Arthur Payne an 11 year old boy was banished from the state for two years after pleading guilty to forging a check. Agent Walker of the state board of charities arranged that Payne leave within ten days and not return for two years. His father will take him to California to stay with friends until the banishment ends. If he returns after two years he will be placed under a probation officer.
Washington reports the state department prepared a reply to a House resolution about ex Consul Macrum’s mail allegedly censored at Cape Town. The communication will be sent to the House tomorrow by the president and argues there is no official knowledge of any mail interference since Macrum made no complaint to the department.
Allentown report states tailor William Ulmer shot his wife in the left cheek then killed himself after a prolonged domestic dispute. The 45 year old and his spouse had been married seventeen years and quarrels centered on support for two children.
Repairs to the railroad are advanced enough to dispatch tonight the first train to Kimberley laden with coal. After military needs come foodstuffs then passengers, with the latter train expected to run Wednesday or Thursday.
Washington reports the senate and house conferees on the house bill remained in semiton for hours without final agreement on many points at adjournment. Negotiations continued as the conference discussed and reviewed the bill, with prospects for an eventual accord.
Pittsburg February 2 The executive board of the American Mirror Manufacturers association discussed a price increase due to higher plate glass costs and plans to complete a consolidation of interests at tomorrow's session.
Sidney Broadbent died at 2.02 this morning at the family home corner of Washington avenue and Mulberry street after a twelve day illness diagnosed as bowel trouble. He leaves three children Martha Victoria and John at his bedside. Born in England in 1828 he moved to the U.S. in 1848 and rose from machinist to foreman at the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western works. He later led Cliff works locomotive manufacturing before joining Dickson Manufacturing as foreman and later general superintendent for fourteen years. He retired in 1896 and was a prominent Republican and Mason with inventors’ notes and extensive city connections. His wife Mrs Broadbent died January 4.
Carbondale voters polled yesterday with results slow to come from outlying districts. T M Nealon lost the Third ward select council by Davis by 100 votes. Dr Fletcher Republican won in the Fifth by 17 votes. G F Swigert fell in the First by 17 votes. Poor directors elected include Peter Huenburg John Lynch Morgan Thomas and A T Cook. J J Gallagher named select director. H J HAwkenberry won the largest majority in the Third and Fourth wards and was chosen school director in multiple wards.
In Kansas City Judge Blower ruled unions may use peaceful boycott and persuasive measures against non-union businesses. The Avery case sought 20000 in damages from Master Horse Shavers Protective Association and Journeymen Horse Shavers Union for boycotting his non-union shop. the jury found for the defendants.
At the Ninth Continental congress of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution the credentials report shows 11 102 members with representation from every state and territory. The White House reception drew nearly 900 attendees who received personal greetings from the president. Also in New York steamship arrivals include Spaarndam from Rotterdam and Standam from New York with other sailings listed for Antwerp, Liverpool, and Bremerhaven.
Lancaster reports a heavier spring voting with ten Republican magistrates elected and six close contests on the other tickets as reform groups contest regular party picks. In Potter County repeal of a long standing prohibition act wins by 1 000 to 1 200, while Condersport Borough votes dry. In Reading and Bethlehem shifts toward Democrats with gains in city councils and school boards.
Forecast for Washington and Eastern Pennsylvania calls for warmer, cloudy conditions with rain Wednesday afternoon and night. Thursday should be fair and colder with brisk winds and a high easterly direction.
