John Koehler, a 42 year old Alsatian long settled in Chicago, is jailed on charges he tried to hire an assassin to kill his entire family. The plot allegedly faltered after three men, John Meade, a Wisconsin miner, Captain Schuettler, and Detective J. Baumer, infiltrated the plan by posing as a killer. Koehler collapsed when arrested and was escorted to a patrol wagon. He had been married four months earlier to Mrs. Frederika Tuebbecke, who owned a four story house on Clybourn Avenue.
The plaintiff sued Koehler for 10000 dollars alleging breach of promise. Affections cooled after the marriage, quarrels grew frequent within weeks, leading to a separation. Disputes escalated into a plot to murder the woman and her children.

A final meeting of the assay commission, appointed by the president, was held in Philadelphia to test gold and silver coins milled last year at the Philadelphia, San Francisco, and New Orleans mints. Reports on counting, assaying, and weighing showed coins within legal fineness and tolerances.

Washington Feb 4 The House rejected the Senate free coinage substitute by a 215 to 10 vote after nearly two weeks of debate. Democrats Crisp and Turner from Georgia led the pro side while Rep Dalzell spoke for the opposition. The roll call showed 25 Republicans and 58 Democrats in favor, with 184 Republicans and 31 Democrats against. The session lasted five hours with extensive speeches and quiet, orderly conduct.
