We thought we had finished buying Fur Capes for this season but demand continues to rise daily. Sizes could not hold out against heavy inroads with some trimmed and others untrimmed, all in fashion's latest mould and all garments remain strictly high class.
In the Lords the address in reply to the queen's speech was moved by Lord Stanmore. Rosebery criticizes Armenia policy and praises Mr. Chamberlain while urging inquiry into the British South Africa Company and Mafeking. Salisbury defends reforms and warns against Monroe doctrine excesses. In Washington, debate on Monroe doctrine grows as Blanchard argues for recognition and a strong navy while Congress wrestles with tariff and coinage issues.
Minnie Swanger of Altoona petitions Blair County Court in Hollidaysburg on February 11 asking for placement in an asylum after reportedly poisoning William McGregor with rat poison in his cup. Friends say she is weak minded and should be committed.
Friends urge release of a girl held on a writ of habeas corpus claiming she is weak minded and asylum bound rather than jailed. Judge Bell will hear the case on Tuesday February 1.
Baltimore reports Sterling Eliott of Boston elected president of the League of American Wheelmen in an unofficial vote of 1 to 40 for Williamson. Louisville chosen as host city for the next mid summer meet following the convention selection.
Charles Phares a barber in Newton shoots and kills his mother-in-law Mrs. RK T Smith, fatally wounds his father-in-law, then commits suicide. He had lived with the Smith family after despondent weeks, leaving his wife and a six year old child. Mrs. Phares fainted and is in danger.
Shipping notes report arrivals and sailings including the Braun enwels from Bremen and the Havel Geest departing New York bound for the Isles of Man or nearby port, with additional vessels listed for arrival or voyage in the period.
Governor Hastings backs Senator Quay for president if he runs. Officials including Deputy AG Elkin and Banking Commissioner Gilkeson pledge support, saying Quay’s candidacy would unite Pennsylvania Republicans and energize the party nationally. A separate report notes the box of diamonds seized from a steamer, with Captain Loeuwitz to be arrested.
John L McGough who five weeks earlier confessed to killing Ross insists he was the true slayer and that Shea was innocent. The condemned man prayed with clergy before execution and a post mortem showed lung disease. An interview with McGough followed.
Secretary Olney reports John L. Waller once U.S. consul at Tamatave Madagascar will be released by France and pardoned under an accord with the United States. He faces a French prison sentence for treason and has not consented to the arrangement. Ambassador Eustis will arrange his return to the United States.
Philadelphia reports a Red Star Line steamer Rhyneland seizure of twenty thousand dollars in diamonds. Captain Loesawitz faces Megally charges as federal agents arrest and pursue the case. The diamonds were thought smuggled from Antwerp with agents Cummings and Gallen involved in the investigation.
The League of American Wheelmen’s Baltimore assembly elected Sterling Filiott of Massachusetts as vice president and chose Archibald Willison of Maryland as opponent. Louisville won the bid to host the mid-summer meet over Toledo. Murpby, a suspended rider, was reinstated, and reports showed $16,187 in receipts and a cash balance of $4,245. Membership reached 40,42 with 1,470 women riders. The convention set Louisville as the meeting site and adjourned until tomorrow.
El Paso reports a ministers union delegation traveling to Calzada Juarez to appeal to Governor Ahumada for reinforcement of the gendarmerie by Mexican troops amid the Fitzsimmons Mather-Wight-Dan Stuart bout rumors. John L Sullivan and Paddy Ryan were promised a welcome. US Marshal Mall ruled out fights in New Mexico.
Lula May Hollingsworth was released from custody at 2 PM in Indianapolis after Superintendent Colbert telegraphed Cincinnati and received word no further expenses would be paid. She vowed to go to Cincinnati and keep her identity secret while claiming the prior story is false and will be proven.
National Chairman Harrity and State Chairman Wright with Pennsylvania leaders arrived at the Commonwealth hotel for the state committee meeting to set Harrisburg as the convention site in mid April. A resolution backing ex Governor Pattison for president is expected to pass.
Three alarms between 8 and 10 last night halted a potential disaster in Temple Court on Spruce street and at Cramer's gallery on Lackawanna avenue. Firemen from Phoenix Chemical Company contained two blazes with minor damage, while a Polish family dwelling in the Sixth ward burned completely after an earlier extinguisher effort. Attorney J. B. Rhodes escaped from his window as flames cut off the stair, and several tenants suffered smoke and water damage. The Prothingham theater lobby staff aided evacuations, keeping 1,700 spectators unaware of the danger nearby.
Harrisburg state official says Seneca descendants of Corn Planter were cheated in selling land once granted by patent. Indians sold much of the site to Connelly, accepted notes, without mortgage, leaving them with unresolved rights. Gearhart finds no state action available. suggests court suit in Venango County and possible consultation with Herbert Welsh.
Leesburg Ohio February 1 burglars used explosives to blow in the vault door and safe at the Leesburg bank. The entire loot is reported as a large sum with additional valuables missing.
