Reports from London detail the heavy fighting around Vaal Krantz with General Buller’s forces pressing the Boers. Casualties rise and observers note the center wedge pressure as British and Boer positions clash amid artillery and tactical shifts.
Light infantry the King's Royal Rifles and the Scottish Rifles charged and cleared the position. General Hildyard's brigade relieved General Lyttelton's brigade at sunset. Fighting continued until nine with several prisoners taken. Boers suffered heavy losses and some dead were found in trenches. A large Boer force attacked Nord-Wesla in Zululand, destroying public buildings and taking prisoners. Volunteers with artillery moved to oppose further Boer advance.
Boston reports a hospital corps for the Boer War effort organized in the United States. The group includes capable physicians, nurses, and attendants with forty tons of medical supplies. They will depart February 15 while a New England contingent travels to New York to join others headed west. The expedition is overseen by Irish societies and John W. Finerty in Chicago.
Berlin reports the naval bill read for the first time in the Reichstag as Admiral Tirpitz and other officials attended. He argued Germany must build a strong fleet to match foreign powers, stressing long preparation and financial limits while aiming to protect vital commerce routes.
Philadelphia February 2 1900 The University of Pennsylvania will confer an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters on the president of the Republic of Mexico during University Day. Since Diaz cannot attend in person the Mexican ambassador to the United States will appear to receive the degree on his behalf.
Washington reports the state department received from Scranton authorities an extradition application for Auguste Morel and Antoine Robert. They are held in Montreal after being arrested for shooting two policemen.
In February reports from New York list Taurte arriving from Liverpool via Queenstown, Oceanic bailed for New York, Spaarndam sailing to New York from Rotterdam, and Romany passing New York for Rotterdam.
The thirty second annual convention of the National American Woman Suffrage Association convened here. President at Large Rev Anna Bhaw addressed the gathering while reports from the international council of women and sports were read.
The Ways and Means committee framed a tariff for Puerto Rico placing duties at 25 percent on goods from the United States and vice versa. John Dougherty of Philadelphia, aged 11, was killed near Port Bowkley when he fell from a moving Lehigh Valley passenger train while attempting to pass between cars on a curve. The accident occurred this afternoon as the train lurched and Dougherty was struck by wheels.
A blaze last night leveled Wiley Hall in Bloomington destroying the chemical laboratory and several departments. Loss is placed around five thousand dollars with other buildings endangered before the fire was checked.
Assistant District Attorney Osborne harshly questioned Molineux’s silence on the stand and pressed that his life’s motive was hatred for Cornish. He contrasted Cornish’s openness with Molineux’s avoidance and urged witnesses to prove innocence if possible as the trial paused for recess.

Lancaster Pennsylvania February 8 preparations near completion to reopen the Bart township nickel mines owned by Joseph Wharton of Philadelphia. The mines were abandoned years ago but richdeposits have since been found and a large workforce is erecting new machinery and buildings.

Rain drenched Frankfort as William Goebel the Democratic leader lay in state and a vast procession moved from the Capitol hotel to the cemetery. Officials, citizens, and crowds estimated near 10 000 attended the long march while speakers blamed the assassination and pledged to continue Goebel’s policies. The casket lay in the chapel under guard until weather cleared for burial.
In the House of Commons today William St. John Brodrick stated there was no question of compensation under the Clayton Bulwer treaty. Britain maintains the advantages of neutrality and equal protection of trade in the canal as previously agreed.
