Judge Simonton Rules Long and Short Haul Clause Self Enforcing
In Dauphin county court Judge Simonton holds the long and short haul clause of the renstitution of Pennsylvania is self enforcing and does not need legislative action. The ruling came in a suit in equity by Harrisburg rolling mills against the Pennsylvania Railroad, with a demurrer over the clause as grounds. An appeal is expected due to its bearing on freight rate discrimination and railway consolidation matters. A Mexican rail project seeks $8 to $10 million capital, 160 miles, 35 built, with Mexico offering concessions. Robert P. Porter of Boston named president.
