Travels Through China Americans Are Not Liked
Frank G. Carpenter lectured on China at the YMCA on a tour of observations about Chinese life. He described Beijing walls and palaces, imperial rites, and the contempt Americans faced, noting the literati as source of trouble and the emperor as central to governance.
Glorious Future for China Predicted by Speakers
In Scranton discussions Mr. Carpenter and Mr. Chang extol China’s industrial potential. They foresee China not only making its own goods but becoming a global manufacturing hub, capable of producing items from collar buttons to locomotives and even firearms, yet lacking battlefield warfare experience. They compare China and Japan, note the empire’s limited rail and the vast wall project, and urge supporting local industry over distant metros to keep jobs at home.
