Relatives seek to annul claiming undue influence and lack of competency during the rushed ceremony while Stewart was ill. The couple married November 1 and Stewart died shortly after leaving a sizable estate and life policies. Prominent local figures are involved and the matter will be brought before the court.
James J. McGaffigan head of J. Q. McGaffigan & Co sues the Pullman Palace Car Co for 5000 pounds alleging negligence caused his heatless car ride from Boston to St Johns in February 1862. He claims the cold led to a violent fever and lasting health impairment. The case has been in court since 1812.
George Wilbur, 55, shot his 17 year old nephew near Augustin, then killed himself. Neighbors found the boy dead behind the stove with a bullet wound to the brain while the older man had a gunshot through the mouth. Authorities regarded Wilbur as delirious and temporarily deranged.
