Cleveland Only Prefers Law Without His Signature Tariff Veto
President Cleveland writes Representative Catchings to explain his decision to let the tariff bill become law without his signature. He argues the measure still improves current conditions, blocks protectionist excess, and supports Democratic reform while criticizing influences and “treason” within his party. He stresses free raw materials, fair consumer costs, and enabling American industry to reach foreign markets. The letter reflects party loyalty, cautious reform, and opposition to Republican protectionism.
