Columbus Aug. 16 Republicans opened the presidential campaign in Ohio with monster sessions. Ten thousand voters gathered at Broad Street tent to hear Sherman Foraker Woodford and Bushnell. Sherman spoke about the free coinage of silver, the gold standard, and national finance, urging support for William McKinley and stressing currency stability. The crowd filled the day with enthusiastic reception as speakers outlined campaign strategy and policy.

Hanna Pleased With Western Campaign Outlook

Man kills self after shooting wife in park

Lancaster August 16. Charles Gundakee, who shot at his wife in Conestoga Park last night but caused no serious injury, turned the gun on himself and fired three shots in the head. He died early this morning as officers prepared to arrest him. He was taken to a hospital.
