Militia and police respond as two men exchange fire with soldiers near the Brown Hoisting Works in Cleveland Avenue. Buildings are struck by bullets while bystanders and workers gather. a plan for a large sympathetic strike is announced by the Brown Hoisting Works executive committee.
The speaker asserts Moore Brothers are not broke but temporarily embarrassed, trusting bankers at the stock exchange to safeguard them. He also defends Diamond Match as good property with untapped earning power, promising a forthcoming public statement.

Jacksonville Florida April 4 The threat of a bolt by silver Democrats seems averted as the state executive committee removes two gold electors J A Welhorne and J My Visher and substitutes F B Carter and BR Borford, restoring evenly split silver and gold electors.
In Todianapolis on August 4, reports say no fusion agreement between the Populists and the Lame erate party in Indiana for the electoral ticket. Democrats claim no advantage to fusion and estimate four fifths of Populist voters will align with Senganya.
Testimony at the Meadow railroad collision inquest fixes responsibility on the dead Reading express engineer Edward Farr. He allegedly ran a danger signal at 45 mph, but died with his hand on the engine lever as a collision occurred. Tower operator Houser and other witnesses testified about semaphore positions and signals. The inquest continuation was planned for Thursday.
J M Smouth brings news from Snow Mountain southwest of Canyon City of a violent encounter between sheepmen and cattlemen about a week earlier. In the fight Mr Kitchen a Princeville Sheep and Land Company employee and two cattlemen were slain, another sheepman Ernest Shearer nephew of Joseph Shearer wool grower was killed. The conflict reflects long standing enmity over range use with cattlemen claiming sheep drove cattle off the range.
In Rockford on August 4 a dispute erupts on the school board after adopting a new geography text that omits Sweden, Norway and several other nations. Swedish and Norwegian residents protest that their children learn nothing of their homeland in early grades while a board majority favors dropping the geography in response to public pressure.
A Newport Pennsylvania grand jury returned true bills of indictment against bank officials and directors including president Thomas H. Milligan cashier J Holmes Irving and Henry B Bechtel and doctors William S Clana Henry O Orvis plus Gilax Wright and Charles Troutman in connection with the failed Stratford Bank case.
By agreement of counsel the defendants will not be brought to trial until the November term of court. They are at present under bail after allegedly receiving deposits while knowing the bank was insolvent.
Mr and Mrs Cornelius Vanderbilt Jr stay at United States Hotel in Saratoga New York and avoid publicity while greeting telegrams. The couple strolls to Hathorn Spring and Congress Spring Park then relax on the hotel piazza. They plan to visit Saratoga Lake and Woodlawn Park and will stay for about five weeks.
Hawley August 4 about 140 o'clock this evening Box Brothers general store and dwelling at Georgetown were destroyed by fire. Hoxs family escaped in night clothes. Entire stock and house goods lost. A kerosene explosion caused the blaze.
The Democratic state convention in Minneapolis on Aug. 4 expelled Don Lawler Frank W McCutcheon and Judge McCafferty for being gay delegates. Lawler led protests and the expelled men walked out with their delegation. John Lind was nominated for governor by acclimation as the platform backed direct presidential and senatorial elections.
Reports from Canton and other cities indicate Silverite Democrats plan to back the Republican ticket. Major McKinley greets supporters while Bryan is sought for a post oncoming train speeches. Campaign materials and state party actions shape the cross state alignment ahead of the Indianapolis gathering.
Water from the nearby river flooded Ringling Brothers tents in Atlantic Iowa as the grand cavalcade finished. Spectators fled to higher ground while attendants guided exits and rescue parties formed to carry frightened women and children to safety.
