First Louisiana Revolution Martyrs Face Spanish Justice
The July 4 1769 arrival of the Spanish fleet prompted New Orleans leaders Lafrentiere Marquis Milhet and others to resist. O’Reilly’s court condemned them to death or imprisonment after a formal trial. Lafrentiere Noyan Milhet and others were executed or banished. Some were pardoned later, while the affair marked early Republican martyrdom in America.
