Perils of Gunnery on a Navy Ship
A U S navy officer recalls a near disaster during heavy gun practice. A gun firing circuit was briefly unlocked as a breech not locked, and a gun was nearly discharged. The gunner’s mate disabled the circuit to prevent detonation, while powder in the turret and a bare passage to the magazine remained open. The incident prompted the department to adopt electrical safeguards ensuring breech locking before discharge.
