A prison awakening scene unveils two inmates near dawn as one confesses a previous theft to the other. The narrator recounts a robber’s motive, the fruit of temptation, and a plan to endure the inquiry by faith in a better self while the jailer stands outside.
In a prison cell I hear a confession of a bank fraud tied to a brother's death and a planned escape. The narrator conspires with Haines to steal five thousand dollars, to be repaid by returning the money after the brother dies, and seeks release as the grand jury delays. The climax ends with the money mysteriously returned and a surprising twist as Haines becomes an evangelist and the narrator wed.
