The navy proposal on four battleships may be cut to two and replaced with gunboats for rivers and shallow waters.
The partially decomposed body found in Independence creek near Avoca has been identified as John Evans from Providence. His disappearance from a Providence boarding house in February was noted by The Tribune. Mrs. James Hughes and two others identified the clothing as Evans.
A Weather Bureau bulletin reports the warm spell east of the Mississippi has broken with a 10 to 30 degree drop in 24 hours. Western New York and western Pennsylvania see the largest falls, while eastern New York and southern New England are about 10 degrees cooler than yesterday. Temperatures remain unusually high in parts, with a southwestern trend continuing in the Middle Atlantic States as a 10 degree fall is forecast for Monday.
Henry A. Anderson arrived at the Washington executive mansion claiming inventions for hunters including a patent boat and a high speed duck gun. He was sent to a police station to await examination and was found dead in his cell, hanging from the bars.
In Troy on April 19 George Kaiser, a German resident of Sand Lake who separated from his wife, shot her twice and fled to a farmhouse. A sheriff's posse of several hundred Villigers pursued and captured Kaiser after a gunfight in which Deputy Sheriff Horton was wounded in the hand.
Sharon Pennsylvania April 1 George Davis 16 was killed by a moving train while attempting to rescue a small dog crossing a bridge. His foot became fastened and the train ran over him causing fatal injuries.
In Pittsburgh on April 19 the Harrity faction swept the Democratic primary in Allegheny County. Returns show the Harrity wing carried all precincts and will send a solid Harrity delegation to the convention.
Bulawayo reports rising danger as Matabele forces mass near the town. A small British force and 900 fighting men hold the defense while a relief column advances from Balingbury toward Bulawayo recently. Armament includes five seven pounders and several rapid fire guns with 350 Lee-Metford rifles.
A morning ball game in Green's Lane sparked a brawl between Mullarkey and Tobin boys. One Tobin suffered a severely broken nose needing Dr Saltry's care. Tobin parents led a loud parade before Mullarkey members faced threats until Patrolman Saltry arrived to quell the disturbance.
Fred Peters of Dunmore, an Italian visiting relatives on West Side, fell from a veranda at Nealis Court tenements striking a stone wall and suffering a concussion. He was admitted to Lackawanna Hospital in serious condition.
Frank Bell, 6, son of James Bell of West Market street, had a peculiar accident while riding a brobers wagon. He slipped while getting off, his head struck a wheel, his scalp lacerated and he suffered bruises. A doctor said only minor injuries resulted.
