No Brigade Encampments State Treasury Cannot Stand the Expence
Special to the Scranton Tribune from Harrisburg on April 1 reports there will be no National Guard encampments this year due to depleted state funds. A $150,000 drain on the treasury prompts cuts in common school and charitable budgets, with $1,400,000 saved for charities over two years. Officials including Governor Hastings and State Treasurer Jackson discuss reduced revenues, possible 10 percent across the board cuts, and opposition to further deficits. The plan eliminates three brigade encampments saving $160,000 but angering about 400 National Guard members while threatening new asylums and soldiers orphan school funding. A legislative adjournment likely by May 24 to push month-long Senate bills deliberations.
