Washington reports Rep Aldrich rebuts Mark Hanna over India delegates remarks claiming Hanna overstates McKinley support. Lorimer asserts Cullom leads Illinois delegates and others for Cullom in Illinois districts. He predicts Cullom will win a large majority at Illinois convention despite McKinley claims.
A fire at Brunswick Georgia ignited around 11 AM and burned through docks warehouses and a large block of brick buildings. Losses are estimated at about half a million dollars with one death and multiple injuries. Guards from the Brunswick Riflemen and naval reserves were deployed as firefighters battled the blaze and darkness from smoke blanketed the area.
Two boys hunting near the state penitentiary found the dead body of Maxey Cobb the treasurer of Lancaster County. Cobb had apparently died by his own hand amid a treasury shortage of nearly 0 00 that surfaced last week and for which he was held responsible.
News from Buffalo Creek in Ownley county reports nine people drowned when Buffalo Creek burst. The dead include Mrs. George Drew and two children. Further details on remaining victims were not immediately available.
New York April 4 Representatives of major iron and steel firms attended a secret gathering at the Waldorf Hotel to discuss a pool program. They plan to raise billet prices from 17 to about 90 a ton and dispatch production by national needs. Carnegie and others voiced skepticism about lasting effects and competition. The American Manufacturer predicts broad industry impact if higher rates take hold.
Baltimore April 2 Mrs Mattie V Angeller and husband Frank charged with murdering Charles F Tarker Massachusetts salesman will gain temporary freedom after a jury undecided since yesterday afternoon. Judge Wickes set joint bail at 10000 and Angeller was released after three sureties posted 10000 each while a juror stood for second degree verdict.
The middle states will see clear colder weather with fresh to northwest and west winds. Morning temperatures rise slowly in the Delaware valley area. Saturday should bring warmer conditions with fresh west to southerly winds, increasing cloudiness and likely snow and rain near lake regions.
