Doctor pleads guilty to fraud over heart stents
Sandesh Rajaram Patil, a former southern Kentucky cardiologist at St. Joseph's Hospital in London, Kentucky, pleaded guilty to falsely stating patient conditions to obtain payments for heart stent procedures. He faces 30 to 37 months in federal prison with sentencing set for August 27 in London. The hospital repaid $256,800 to the government for the reimbursed procedures from 2009 and 2010. Prosecutors say he is the third cardiologist nationwide and the first in Kentucky targeted in federal health care fraud cases related to stent placements.
