Motorola aids Viking Mars relay with Scottsdale equipment
Motorola's Government Electronics Division in Scottsdale designed built and tested the Mars orbiter gear that relays Viking craft data to Earth. The system includes flight data telemetry and S and X band subsystems feeding signals to 210 foot dish arrays at JPL Pasadena where 3000 plus 700 mission staff process the information for the Mars control center. Motorola will reuse this technology for the 1979 1981 Mariner Jupiter Saturn mission involving two spacecraft.

Investors weigh takeover of thrift firms in Phoenix
A group of investors in U.S. and Lincoln Thrift associations considers taking over and running or liquidating the thrift firms. John C. Cook says they will seek a court takeover from U.S. District Judge Walter Craig as trustees manage assets after receivership begun last December amid an SEC fraud suit. Depositors may receive about 10 cents on the dollar in an initial distribution. Cook says the move could protect money tied up, about $52 million in deposits, if operation can be profitable under safeguards.
