Dust control efforts begin in Maricopa County
The Maricopa County Air Pollution Control Bureau started a major dust control drive after sending letters to contractors requiring permits for excavations and pool work. Robert Taylor said Phoenix air often exceeds standards with areas reaching about 200 micrograms per cubic meter, attributing much of the dust to construction activity despite weather.

Beer can toss costs Phoenix man and driver fined
A 23-year-old Phoenix man, Steven James Pierce, was fined 110 dollars for throwing a beer can from a car window and 220 dollars for driving while intoxicated. Scottsdale Teachers Trade Four Quarter Days for A Day Off
The Board of Education approved closing schools on October 29 and canceling four quarter days to let Scottsdale Federation of Teachers attend a state convention. The move follows a recommendation by Supt. Gabriel Reuben and gains consent from teachers groups. An alternate plan to add a school day was rejected due to expected absences. The board also discussed counseling widows and widowers of district employees and approved purchasing errors and omissions insurance for three years at a cost of 27,600.
