The Commerce Department reported the leading indicators index fell 1.5 percent in August, the first drop since February 1975, driven by higher manufacturing layoffs and weaker business spending. Eight of eleven components pointed downward as orders and contracts declined.
APS warns a failure to approve emergency rate increases could force withdrawal from the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station delaying power for at least a decade. Keith Turley says Palo Verde would meet about a quarter of APS demand when completed in 1982 if the project proceeds.

Town Manager Oscar Butt called for area planning by Phoenix Scottsdale and Paradise Valley to curb drainage after heavy rain. The First National Bank of Arizona cites a 1.4 percent drop in Maricopa County food costs from August to September driven by lower prices for fruits vegetables meats and fish. Pima County shows a 0.2 percent decline with meats poultry and fish down while Tucson cereal prices rise.
