The Pacific coast resort Mazatlan suffered extensive damage from a Saturday hurricane. One person died and up to 10 000 residents fled or faced peril as floods damaged homes, cut water and power, and doomed 400 houses. Troops guarded against looting while relief flights ferried food and medicine.
A unnamed Joint Committee critic charged the Atomic Energy Commission and NAS with delaying site selection for a $300 million atom smasher. NAS will trim 85 sites to about six, then AEC picks the final location after authorization and congressional funding. The project could employ about 2000 scientists and technicians.
In a major battle 40 yards distant north of Saigon the 101st Airborne killed an estimated 57 Viet Cong while suffering light American casualties. Meanwhile five civilians including two women were executed by guerrillas at a government outpost 90 miles south of Saigon, as attacks erupted across the region. An American plane was shot down, killing three civilians, with pilots from Air America identified among the dead.

Actor Zachary Scott, 51, was listed in critical condition at his Austin home. He was said to be losing ground slowly in his battle to recover from brain surgery after being flown from New York to Texas in July.
