Senate OKs Prompt Trident Sub Work Despite Delay Push
The Senate approved moving ahead with the Trident missile submarine program by a 49 to 47 vote, rejecting a delay strategy that sought to remove 885 million from a 1.5 billion defense request. Proponents argued faster production matched Soviet progress, while opponents warned research must precede production to avoid costly revisions. President Nixon met leaders, voicing concern over potential troop reductions in Europe.
