City council failed to reach a quorum for last night’s session leaving unfinished business. Rumors circulated that City Manager Bob McNutt was fired or resigning, but Mayor Mort Kimsey and officials denied the claims. Only three of seven members appeared, with four needed for a quorum.
Pentagon sources indicate the United States could mobilize several hundred more jet fighters to Europe by year end if the Berlin crisis worsens. Eighteen Air National Guard fighter squadrons with 411 jets, plus four reconnaissance squadrons, may be deployed. 30 to 90 days training needed.
Congress ends its longest session in a decade with Senate fury at the House over a final money bill. Dirksen threatens recall and adjournment as the House departs sine die after passing a $1.125 billion supplemental appropriation.

The United States in Berlin denounces the two year prison sentence given to California students Gilbert Ferrey and Victor Pankey for allegedly trying to smuggle a East Berlin girl to West Berlin. The youths were tried in secret after a two day trial. American officials are reviewing the case and considering steps, as they report the communists blocked a relative contact and barred a West Berlin lawyer.
Frances Neel, 26, was found bleeding and attacked by a man after leaving a bar with her brother and a friend. She described being forced into a car, driven to the desert, and threatened with a knife before being released. She remained in serious condition at St Joseph’s Hospital. Police searched the area for the suspect.
A 23 year old service station attendant in Phoenix has confessed to abducting and assaulting a 26 year old woman. He is also being questioned in connection with the mutilation slaying of 83 year old Mary Essa Boyer last month.
President Kennedy announced Allan Dulles will resign from the CIA after eight years. He named John A. McCone, former Defense Department and AEC official, to replace him and work with Dulles until November. Dulles praised by Kennedy as courageous and selfless. McCone previously chaired the AEC and served as undersecretary of the Air Force.
The Scottsdale Players present Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest at Stagebrush Theater tomorrow for a four day run in the round. Admission is 1 dollar with reserved tickets via the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce. The Stagebelles will run a hamburger supper before the final show on Sunday. Cast includes Fay Bullock Barbara OConnor Hal Chidnoff Mary Evelyn Stone Charles Cartwright Harry Wilson Richard Jones Carol Thomas and Charles Still.
British Foreign Secretary Earl Home rejected the Russian proposed troika to run the United Nations. The plan would name three secretaries general from different blocs with a veto, with three deputies. The United States also rejected the idea as Britain urged an impartial international civil service to preserve the UN as mankind’s best hope for peace.
Arizona House Leader Bill Stephens told two Democratic clubs that the party has a strong chance to win three statewide offices in 1962. He named Governor Fannin Attorney General Pickrell and Congressman Rhodes as vulnerable targets, urging coordinated campaigns and criticizing current governance and policy directions. Ben Foote echoed concerns over federal project funding and control issues tied to the Upper Colorado River Storage Project.
