Arizona Leaders Plan Hearing Over EPA Clean Air Rules
State officials and city leaders announce a public hearing to avoid a confrontation with the EPA over parking and construction regulations. House Majority Leader Burton Barr says Arizona will present a clear plan and seek delay of the Jan 1 implementation. He warns developers face EPA approval hurdles for projects adding 250+ spaces and indirect source limits affecting areas like Central Avenue.

Tucson sees pollution above standards but cleaner than Phoenix
Pima County Air Pollution Control Director C. Lee Fox said Tucson auto pollution ran up to 50 percent above health standards while smog shows in Tucson and carbon monoxide dominates in Phoenix. A year-long study cites roughly 450 to 500 tons of carbon monoxide and about 100 tons of hydrocarbons in 1973. Fox notes Tucson readings are 50 percent below Phoenix, yet oxidants exceeded the federal standard 13 times in one site last year and a Tucson plan may avoid car retrofit costs and constrain new parking spaces.
