Armored cars and troops ringed the National University campus as officers surrounded the Olympic Stadium during a dress rehearsal for the 1968 Games. A night of anti-government protests left one policeman dead and 18 injured, police arrested 162 rioters as soldiers guarded the stadium to deter disruption.
Government officials identify Ramon Garcia and Carlos Londono as leaders of the hijackings on two Vianca Airlines jets. The Boeing 727 with 71 passengers and crew landed at Camaguey before being released. the other plane went to a separate Cuban airfield. The incident raises suspicions of Havana-directed violence, with 137 aboard overall.
Obituary notices report Richard F Survaunt 57 of 6410 East Oak an associate traffic engineer in Phoenix for 11 years died Saturday at Good Samaritan Hospital. Services scheduled 3 p.m. Tuesday at Church of All Christian Faiths Lincoln Drive private interment. Survaunt born Chicago moved to Flagstaff 1946 then Phoenix 1948. survived by wife Dorothy B daughter Jeanine mother Ella K Survaunt brother Edward all of Phoenix. Friends may call Paradise Chapel 7 to 9 p.m. today. Funeral details for Thomas J Kelley 8308 East Plaza assistant principal and football coach at St Marys High School include Mass 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St Marys Catholic Church North 3rd Street Phoenix. Kelley died Friday at Scottsdale Baptist Hospital age 47. A Cleveland attorney and former assistant state attorney general in Ohio he moved to the Valley in 1967 for family health. He played end at John Carroll University and Western Reserve University coached at Western Reserve 1948 1959 and graduated from Cleveland Marshall Law School. He served in World War II earning the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Survivors include wife Eleanor two sons Thomas and Robert two daughters Nancy and Maureen.
The Rural Fire Department reported a Saturday car fire at 920 N 99th St damaging a vehicle belonging to Richard Stanley of that address. A grass fire at 82nd St near McDowell was extinguished with smoke in Frank Crehan's Shoe Store. No injuries or losses reported.
Scottsdale police report two burglaries over the weekend totaling 1397 in value. Signe Lynn Johnson reports a theft at 425 E Karll Dr including stereo, TV, jewelry and a piggy bank with coins. A neighbor saw the items loaded into a station wagon backed into a carport. Another break in at a model townhouse damaged a television and furnishings worth about 180. A sales office burglary at 774 E Minnezona was also cited by Haan & Cullers sales manager W Blackwell.
A Phoenix dental firm announces a new denture adhesive named Super Dent. Officials claim two imported powders mixed create a powerful bond, allowing wearers to eat almost any food. The product is said to be available at drug counters.
United Press International notes stock activity at 3 p.m. EDT with Dow Jones averages showing 30 industrials at 998.77 up 0.35, 20 rails at 260.22 up 0.91, and 65 utilities at 130.02 up 0.65. Trading volume reached 9.96 million shares as many major names fluctuated.
United Nations Secretary General Thant said a General Assembly vote on U S bombing North Vietnam was suggested but not practical as the issue is not on the agenda. He defended his three year stance that cessation of bombing is the first step to peace while noting the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia was a deplorable setback.
Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, campaigning in Ohio, pledged federal aid to poor families, including expanded medical care and higher Social Security benefits for children. He attacked Nixon as evasive, urged a family assistance program, and floated reducing US forces in Vietnam gradually with safeguards for allies.
