Humphrey Presses Nixon Debate Amid Wallace ruling

Humphrey challenged Nixon to a national television debate as House Commerce staff cleared a three way format with George Wallace. Nixon had offered no commitment while Wallace supporters organized fundraisers and Wallace circulated birthday events. Humphrey campaigned with Kennedy and McGovern as Morse criticized Johnson war policies.

Yanks Strike Western DMZ Invasion Drive

UPI reports a 2000 soldier Marine task force dropped by helicopter into the western DMZ at the border of North and South Vietnam. They killed 110 North Vietnamese, seized nearly 500 rifles, and pressed a two battalion push from the 4th and 9th Marine regiments to disrupt infiltration routes along the Ben Hai river.

Bomb threat found at Tucson home linked to earlier blasts

Police reported a bleach bottle bomb with dynamite and a partially lit fuse in the fireplace at Mrs. C. Erlinda Smith’s home on North Troquois. Demolition experts disarmed the device after burned marks appeared around the fireplace. Mrs. Smith and her son Robert T. Smith had earlier faced a bomb explosion on the same lot. The incident followed a string of blasts in Tucson over the past two months.

Scottsdale boy injured in tricycle collision at intersection

A four year old Scottsdale boy suffered a broken leg after riding his tricycle into an intersection at 85th Place and Fairmont Avenue and being struck by a car driven by 57 year old Charles Sea ton of Virginia. Paramedics took him to Baptist Hospital where he was treated for a broken leg and cuts and bruises and was reported in satisfactory condition.

Czechoslovakia’s leaders postponed a planned visit to Moscow citing government opposition to Kremlin demands. They traveled to Brno for a trade fair with Premier Oldrich Cernik Parliament President Josef Smrkovsky and Slovak Party Secretary Gustav Husak. CTK said crowds welcomed them and a regional poll showed strong support for Dubcek’s liberal leadership amid signs of unrest if he were ousted.
