Help Hotline Aims to Stop Child Abuse Before It Starts
Nancy Carrol leads a child abuse hotline that guides upset parents and concerned relatives to support networks. Volunteers listen, assess risk, and refer callers to food, shelter, clothing, drug, and pregnancy services, with follow up to ensure aid was received.
Child abuse hotline grows with 50 volunteers in Phoenix
The 2415 E. Fillmore building in Phoenix hosts about 50 volunteers answering calls around the clock. Fifteen volunteers come from Scottsdale Paradise Valley. training begins this week. Most volunteers are women, many with children, linking to callers’ empathy. Calls rose to 90 in July from 57 in June. The hotline started earlier this year and handles issues beyond child needs such as food, finances, and marriages. Most calls come between 9 am and 10 pm as women wait for husbands to leave. Some say communication at home is poor and the husband can be the problem.
