A fire ignited by spilled flammable liquid at Ruth Hammering’s home on 6743 E Monte Vista caused 1500 in damage. Firefighters say the attic burned after a hot water heater pilot light ignited the spill. A second minor blaze at Lyle McCurdy’s 8628 E Wilshire caused 500 in damage from an electrical short after a storm.
Mrs. Harry Miller, 36, former head teller of Western Savings & Loan Association’s Scottsdale office, was indicted by a federal grand jury Tuesday on two counts of falsifying bank records. She will be arraigned in federal court Monday at Phoenix. Miller resides at 8646 Bealls Sells, Scottsdale.
John D. Rockefeller III urged the Senate to restore tax incentives for donations to charity, arguing that House tax reform would curb giving and hurt funds for museums and other causes. He testified against provisions restricting charitable deductions and noted abuses exist but can be halted without undermining private initiative.
At Whitehall Theater 80 women auditioned for a nude role in Pajama Tops. A 60 year old told producer Paul Raymond she cannot stay long due to a modeling engagement and did not get the part.
Five evaporative coolers valued at 1500 were stolen from a vacant house at 801 N Brown Ave. Tilton Keefe, a real estate broker, found the items missing while checking the rental for owner Howard Heaton. A separate burglary in the Granite Reef area saw three guns and a radio-stereo missing from Jacqueline Neuen’s home between 8 30 a m and 12 30 p m Tuesday with entry gained by forcing an arcadia door. A third burglary at Donna Stevens’s apartment on KE Mariposa between 9 a m and 6 p m Tuesday saw a dinner ring a man’s wristwatch and cash taken, amounting to 127.33. Police say entry was through an unlocked arcadia door.
Judge Clement F. Haynsworth told the Senate Judiciary Committee he agrees with the 1954 ruling that separate but equal is not equal while sidestepping questions on how Warren era decisions align with his views. He stressed his written opinions reflect his legal philosophy and denied knowingly judging cases with a personal financial interest amid questions over ties to Deering-Miliken subsidiary Darlington Manufacturing.
City Council awards Bentson Construction an Osborn Rd improvement for 151 765. Work to start in three weeks and finish in about two months. Boundaries run Scottsdale Rd east to 70th St west and Second St north to Osborn south. About 40 property owners fund the district plus contingencies up to 20 percent. Council also adds plant nurseries to permit list and raises building height to 60 feet for major shopping centers.
The Arizona Court of Appeals ordered a 90 day delay in the sale of Walker McCune properties in Phoenix and Gila County. The ruling allows Maricopa County Superior Court to extend the delay and to decide on Kersting's claim that McCune fraudulently conveyed assets to a California trustee. Kersting holds a $100000 judgment for professional services and a $25000 bond posted by the California trustee attorney Louis Sackin was ordered refunded during the appeal.
Meetings took place in Douglas and Nogales on the Mexico border as part of Operations Intercept. Treasury officials led talks with local authorities about a nationwide 24 hour vehicle inspection across all ports of entry. Deputy U.S. Atty. Gen. Richard Kleindienst said the effort is ongoing with agents from Canada and other ports to mount a prolonged blitz on drug traffic. A four hour blitz at Agua Prieta delayed some vehicles for two hours while searches were completed.
Hyman Weber 70 died Tuesday at Scottsdale Baptist Hospital. Services Thursday at 10 a.m. at Mes singer Mortuary and interment at Green Acres Memorial Gardens. Native of New York, retired machinist, winters in Scottsdale. Survived by wife Elena three sons Harry Edward Joseph Berlin daughter Mildred Verbil brother in Brooklyn and 13 grandchildren.
Defense Secretary Melvin Laird said the 35 000 man withdrawal announced by President Nixon will significantly cut future draft calls. He avoided exact figures, noting forthcoming talks with Selective Service officials, as 29 000 men were to be drafted in September and another 29 000 in October, with Vietnamization likely reducing upcoming drafts.
John F. Burlingame, a 23 year GE veteran, is appointed vice president and general manager of GE Information Systems Equipment Division. He will head U S computer systems development, production and marketing from Phoenix with offices at 13430 North Black Canyon Highway, succeeding John W. Haanstra who died in an aircraft accident. Burlingame previously led RCA Defense and Communication Systems in Moorestown NY and managed GE Large Computer Systems in Phoenix before 1968 on GE 600 series and GECOS III.
