The council considers a 25 year lease with the Scottsdale Community Players for land at the community center to build a new theater. Parks officials urge waiting for a master plan by the new planning director to ensure benefits for other groups.
Mayor Bill Schrader and about 20 council members met with parks officials at Hotel Valley Ho for dinner then moved to city hall for an informal work session. A sub lease decision for the Scottsdale Community Players remained undecided as reporters listened. The mayor refused a poll of council positions saying decisions must wait for the formal session.
Speaker McCormack pledged the House would attempt to pass Kennedy’s $11 billion tax cut next week after a meeting with the president. Kennedy praised the Ways & Means Committee action and will address the nation to urge swift action to spur growth and avoid a recession. Republican Thomas Curtis challenged equal time and criticized the president’s nationwide address as overreaching. The Rules Committee will hear arguments before voting to clear the bill for floor action.
Louis G. Barton 31 of 6529 E Shea Blvd sustained cuts and bruises when his car struck a tree near 8350 FE Thomas Rd at 8:55 p.m. Monday. Patrolman Paul Smith said Barton’s brakes locked, causing the skid through a fence to the tree. Barton cited for faulty equipment. damage estimated at 180 dollars.
President Kennedy opened a White House and Commerce Department conference urging American business leaders to expand exports. He warned postwar U.S. dominance had faded as rivals gain, calling for aggressive pricing and new markets like the Common Market to boost volume and revive domestic conditions.
A rest home fire in Pinehurst Idaho killed seven elderly residents and injured others. Deputy Sheriff Frank Heath and home owners worked to identify the dead as 30 patients were evacuated. The blaze began around 3 15 am from the furnace room as a nurse discovered the fire and staff led others to safety.
A House Judiciary Subcommittee advanced Kennedy civil rights proposals, expanding voting rights to cover both state and federal elections and broadening school integration to public facilities. The panel also sought broader enforcement by authorizing Justice Department suits on its own initiative.
Scottsdale voters will use 14 polling places on Oct 1 for the school board trustee race, up from last year. Polls at Coronado and Scottsdale high schools plus 12 elementary sites will be staffed by five people each, with pay set for clerks and a poll supervisor. Three candidates Earl Sumrall Lee Smallsteed and Walter Tice must file nominating petitions by Friday. Petitions require signatures from 10 percent of district electors who voted last year, about 390 of 3,898.

A 1948 pickup owned by Clanton Hodges of 227 West Ave caught fire shortly after midnight. The truck bed and tools suffered about 75 dollars in damage after someone soaked rags with gasoline and placed them in the bed, according to Policeman Robert Reed.
Hurricane Cindy weakened to a tropical storm as it struck the Texas gulf coast between Galveston and Port Arthur. No casualties were reported though there was minor property damage and two inches of rain in Port Arthur where 2,000 sought shelter.
