Dow Jones industrial average rose 12.59 points to 639.70 while the transportation index advanced 1.23 to 128.44 and the utilities and stocks measures gained. Total volume reached 18.37 million shares as investors shifted funds across sectors.
Harris, Upham & Co notes stock market shows signs of economic havoc since Nixon's resignation on August 8. Abraham & Co says the descent over the past month surprised investors and hints at a persistent selling habit. Thompson & McKinnon Auchincloss Kohlmeyer believes many stocks are oversold and due for a contratrend upward move. Cash assets are over-bought as public behavior repeats, and rising short-term rates pressure money managers to act.
Washington reports daily notices are required for contracts of 100000 tons or more of wheat corn grain sorghum soybeans or soybean meal to curb shortages. Penalties include fines up to 25000 dollars or a year in jail for knowing violations, but officials note ways around the rule exist such as splitting orders or signing multiple under 100000 ton contracts.
