Four researchers unveiled a device called a fuel reformer that blends water with gasoline to create a hydrogen rich vapor. Tests on a Ford Pinto showed substantially lower emissions than EPA standards, with potential fuel economy gains once miniaturized for road use.
The National Academy of Sciences reports fluorocarbons in aerosol sprays have damaged ozone and may require regulation or bans. Panels urge a one to two year delay on action pending further studies, while preparing regulatory mechanisms. If kept at 1973 levels, ozone could fall about seven percent, with climate effects possible.
About 1,300 of 2,700 eligible Motorola Semiconductor Products Division employees in Phoenix Mesa and Tempe have received lump sum Trade Act benefits for layoffs due to imports under the 1974 program. DES estimates 4.5 million more may be paid to 4,500 potential claimants. 1,800 have not applied. Payments began July 13 with training and relocation support offered.
City, Corps of Engineers plan joint flood control and recreation works in the Indian Bend Wash green belt totaling about 5.3 million dollars. Nine parcels totaling 43 acres remain, with city funds and a federal grant covering most costs. Construction starts in 1977 to 1979 with roads, parks, and trail improvements including Exhibit Plaza and interceptor channels.
