Fall Phosphate Boosts New Alfalfa Yields

Alfalfa fall planting pairs with phosphate fertilization to raise yields. Howard E. Ray of the University of Arizona notes a 6 ton crop uses 270 pounds of potash and 70 pounds of phosphoric acid, with soil supplies and inoculation affecting nitrogen. In phosphate-poor soils 60 to 100 pounds per acre at planting can improve establishment and benefit subsequent crops, with applications possible broadcast disked or drilled at 2 to 3 inches depth.
