Officials upbeat on geothermal test project in Imperial Valley
San Diego Gas & Electric reports encouraging results from an eight million dollar five year geothermal test facility at Nil and detailing near zero scaling and no plugging in the corrosive brine. The company sees potential for a 50 megawatt demonstration plant at Nil and another at Heber possibly funded with federal support. Nuclear power remains cheaper long term, but geothermal offers energy diversification as the utility heads toward operation of Heber by 1980 and plans two more Nil and Heber plants by 1982.
