Phoenix rejects tax vote offer by county board
Phoenix City Council refused a Maricopa County offer to place a 2 percent sales tax referendum on the November ballot. Acting Mayor Jay Carter said the measure would only go to voters if driven by the Phoenix Chamber of Commerce, noting the council is on vacation and must file the referendum by Friday. The council voted to raise the tax from 1 to 2 percent on November 1 to balance the 1976 77 budget, excluding food. The chamber argues the higher tax hurts business and backs a sewer fee instead to secure federal funds for sewage plant expansion.

Fire erupts in McDowell Mountains from lightning
A lightning induced blaze in the McDowell Mountains burned about 100 acres. Capt. Gene Donlan of Rural Metro said the fire started at 5 10 p.m. two miles south of Bell Road and five and a half miles east of Pima Road. Dense shrubs and pine burned on a mountain slope until the area lacked vegetation and the fire died. Access and a dust storm hindered ground crews and stopped aerial support as night fell.
