Mixed School Told To Delay Opening 1 Week

Governor Wallace defied the federal government by ordering Tuskegee High School to delay its desegregation for one week. Troopers surrounded the campus as white students were turned away and Negroes gathered nearby. Desegregation in Huntsville Birmingham and Mobile also faced delays and federal intervention concerns.

Labor Day road toll climbs past four hundred

United Press International reports the Labor Day traffic death toll rose to 438 by 8:30 a.m. PDT with a potential end total near 584. California led with 50 deaths, while Arizona saw two drownings and two fatal pedestrian incidents in Phoenix and near the Colorado River.

Tragic accident ends act by California trick shooter

Marilyn Ploof, 15, was killed when Milo Ploof shot to pop balloons tied to her head during a shooting exhibition in Calexico California. Police say it was an accident and witness accounts support that view. Marilyn collapsed after the 38 caliber shot and died at Calexico Hospital.

U S Minimum Wage Law Boosts Pay for Millions

An estimated 2.6 million workers will see pay increases this week as the federal minimum wage rises from 1.15 to 1.25 dollars per hour effective Tuesday. The change affects about 28 million interstate workers, with many already earning above the new floor. The 44 hour workweek rule also expands to big retail and service employers, mandating time and a half after 44 hours and setting the minimum at 1.00 dollar for that group.

Farmer kills wife and two children with cyanide then commits suicide

In Westphalia Towa a farmer Francis Sehomer 43 released cyanide gas in a bedroom killing his wife Theresa 41 and two children five month old Patty and 18 year old Janice. He then shot himself. A sheriff said two other children were injured with one in critical condition and another in shock. the weapon left a grim toll.

Sports Editor In Car Wreck

A two car collision at 8 am damaged a car driven by Stanley Whisenhunt 22 of Scottsdale. Whisenhunt sports editor of the Scottsdale Daily Progress was cited for speeding after his car and a pickup driven by W O H Neal collided at Thomas Road and 76th Street. Whisenhunt suffered minor injuries.
