Butz predicts stable beef prices through 1974 despite price gaps
Agriculture Secretary Earl L. Butz told NBC that beef prices should remain fairly level into 1975 with pork and poultry possibly rising. He blamed distribution costs for wide margins and noted cattlemen face real trouble as beef prices drop sharply since the year’s start. He cited heavy slaughter and limited imports as factors and urged consideration of imports if they threaten domestic beef. At a House hearing, Swift & Co. and Amalgamated Meat Cutters argued policy distortions, not their fault, widen the beef share.

Barrow Files Tax Return Ahead of Klahr Challenge
Mayor Timothy Barrow submitted the 1973 tax return Oct 16, six days before Councilman Gary Klahr urged disclosure. Klahr reported 1973 gross income of 89 000 and net 45 000 from law practice plus 1000 a month as vice president of Inner Sanctum Inc. Barrow reported 17 692 gross from dividends, 6 000 loss on stock sales, joint deductions of 8 625 and exemptions of 5 320, leaving 3 817 taxable income. Barrow avoided a mudslinging clash by filing quietly. Klahr argued returns need not reflect overall finances.

No-children deeds upheld in Arizona ruling
Arizona Court of Appeals upheld a deed restriction in Enchanted Acres barring residents with children, ruling age limits on ownership are constitutional and rationally related to maintaining a quiet neighborhood. The decision notes a recent anti discrimination law does not apply to ownership units and may affect other adult only communities.
