In Belfast two sisters were killed when soldiers opened fire after a car with three women, one wounded, approached during a search. Police identified the dead as Mary Ellen Meehan and Dorothy Magairre. A man claimed the car did not stop and shots were fired from the vehicle in response.
A 19-year-old Scottsdale man, Clyde Smith of 3707 N Marshall Way, was treated and released at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital after his pickup left the road at 7801 E Indian School, swerving to avoid a second car driven by Carol Negley who was cited for an unsafe lane change. Police investigated five additional noninjury incidents and several collisions and a hit and run Friday night into Saturday.
Police said a man at Motel 6 on Camelback Road asked the front desk operator to write a death by his own action note. He was taken to Arizona State Hospital after officers were alerted at 2 08 p m Friday. Names were not released.
Digging work in a vacant lot at First and Main Streets caused a gas line break Friday at 10 24 a m. Firemen reported no fire and stood by until Arizona Public Service workers shut off the gas flow.
Seven fire trucks responded to a bomb threat at Los Arcos Mall 1300 N Scottsdale Rd at 9 30 p m Friday after an anonymous call. The entire mall was searched with no device found. Police and fire crews have received multiple threats in recent weeks.
