Government data show a 0.3 percent rise in consumer prices in September keeping annual inflation at about 3.6 percent. Food costs edged up slightly while pork poultry eggs coffee and dairy fell. nonfood prices moderated to 0.2 percent.
A Marine helicopter participating in a large U S Marines exercise crashed on Mindoro island in the Philippines killing at least ten of the 39 aboard and leaving several others unaccounted for by nightfall according to military spokesmen.
Former U S representative Richard T Hanna pleaded not guilty to federal charges of bribery fraud and conspiracy in the Korean influence buying scandal. His trial was scheduled for January 9.
State Supreme Court Justice John R. Starkey ruled Berkowitz is fit to proceed on the Son of Sam case. He noted psychiatry is an inexact science and affirmed the defendant's competency on the second day of the hearing.

The Central Arizona Health Systems Agency will hold public hearings while reviewing guidelines. Camelback’s 89 bed main hospital continues near full capacity.
