Chiang Kai-shek Ailing Taiwan's Stable Transition Leader
The aging Chiang Kai-shek, born 1887, will turn 87 on Oct. 31 and remains symbol of Taiwan's prosperity. His son Chiang Ching-kuo, 64, has led the government for years and rejected any deal with Beijing. Taiwan's leadership has steered inflation control and weathered diplomatic setbacks while expanding the island's development compared with mainland China. The elder Chiang began Taiwan's modern era after 1949 when Nationalist forces fled to the island, establishing a model province and countering Communist advances.

Boston researchers propose using a laser light beam to drill a pattern of tiny holes on firearms to encode serial numbers. The holes would be extremely small, hard to erase or forge, and placed on nonremovable parts like a revolver’s recoil plate, enabling identification via a grid and low power microscope.

Bar officials said the ethics panel's stance stands until the board of governors reviews on November 2.
