McGovern calls for two national debates with Nixon

Democratic candidate George McGovern urged President Nixon to join at least two nationally televised debates and offered to finance the programs himself. He suggested neutral formats and locations and said he would cover time for several half hour broadcasts in early November. Nixon had not shown interest in debates and met with Japan's foreign minister at the White House. McGovern, through campaign chairman Lawrence O'Brien, argued the debate could improve campaign tone amid criticism over Watergate related activity.
