Hungerford cleared in bankruptcy charge
U.S. Attorney William Smitherman said there is no basis for federal prosecution of Robert Hungerford Republican candidate for Maricopa County attorney. The FBI investigated claims Hungerford concealed assets in a bankruptcy tied to a car purchase for Benjamin Willis. Authorities found no evidence of knowingly concealing assets or false statements and the case is closed. Willis paid for the car during Hungerford’s 11 months ownership. Hungerford said Willis was a destitute friend who needed a car. Maricopa County Atty Donald Harris had referred the matter to the FBI due to federal jurisdiction.
