At the Supreme Court, Arlington Heights Illinois argues that white communities lack a affirmative duty to admit low income minority families while opposing a Chicago suburb's 1971 decision to rezone land for Lincoln Green a subsidized 195 townhouse project. Illness hits Essex International plant with tests under way

In Kittanning Pennsylvania, air samples from Essex International Inc where 100 workers sickened are being tested for toxins as inspectors work to determine the cause. The plant remains closed and 300 employees are furloughed without pay. Five patients are hospitalized. In Detroit, Ford plants begin restart after a narrowly approved national contract ends a four week strike, but full operation will wait on local disputes at 102 facilities.
