Arizona traffic toll hits 574 with three new deaths
Arizona marked a 574th traffic death as three people died Monday in Phoenix area incidents. Sam Valdez aged 90 was struck crossing a street in northwest Phoenix. Danny Lee Smith 17 died when a go kart’s gas pedal stuck and the vehicle sped into a car. Rick Lafleur 21, also of Phoenix, died after his car malfunction caused it to reverse and crash into a tree during a street race.

Marine Surrenders After AWOL Report in Scottsdale
A 19-year-old Marine who allegedly was absent without leave turned himself in to Scottsdale police Monday night. Douglas Juhlin of Thousand Oaks, California, reported the case from 68th Street and Thomas Road at about 10 p.m. The Marine, stationed at Camp Pendleton in California, was to be handed over to military authorities.
