In a separate note, defense moves toward the end of the murder trial of Roger Elliott 21. The state seeks the death penalty as Elliott pleads innocent and insanity.
A Scottsdale woman Mrs Charles Doyle 43 and her two sons Gregory 7 and Jeffrey 5 died in a head on collision on State Route 79 south of Flagstaff. Doyle husband Charles Doyle was critically injured and in serious condition in Flagstaff hospital. Also killed were Mr and Mrs William Sturges of Sun City in the other vehicle.
Continued fall today and tonight with highs near 6 percent and lows around 58. Tomorrow's high near 2 percent.
About 70 riders from the Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce special activities group depart ABC Ranch in north Scottsdale at noon to start a 32 day trail ride. The route heads east across the McDowell Mountains to a Verde River campsite then returns to Scottsdale for a dinner with their wives before heading back Sunday. John Harper is frail boss and Carl Plumb is group president.
The Scottsdale Planning Commission virtually killed a Community Unit Plan of Development amendment that would allow cluster homes on smaller lots with common land. Opposition from Desert Estates residents cited property value fears while Planning Director George Fretz urged no further action.
Dan Bartos, a Maricopa County Sheriff candidate, alleges brutal treatment after a traffic stop. He says two officers handcuffed him, spoke in Yaqui, and one drew a revolver. officers cite driving without a license and Bartos signs the ticket after custody.
Israeli officials announced a dogfight over the Suez Canal area, saying one Egyptian MIG 21 was shot down on the west bank of the canal near Great Bitter Lake after two MIG 21s crossed into Israeli-held Sinai. No parachute was seen. Israel criticized Britain over proposed peace plans and noted Indian Prime Minister Gandhi's talks with Tito in Belgrade on Middle East issues.
Prosecutors expect police officers to testify today about statements made by Smith after his arrest at a Mesa beauty school on November 12, 1066. The defense argues present insanity questions were injected into the trial by the prosecution and demands immediate examination of Smith.
Four Tempe and Scottsdale funeral home operators urged city governments to subsidize the Buena Vista Ambulance Service so they could exit the business. They cited uncollectable bids and federal wage rules as making ambulance profit impossible and proposed a 16 000 to 20 000 subsidy to support direct ambulance service.
