Rayburn, 79, cancer stricken Speaker, is in a coma with left lobar pneumonia and pleural effusion. Doctors call his condition critical as they try a new drug fluoro uracil to slow malignancy and extend life while Kennedy visited his bedside.
City Council approved calling bids for street rejuvenation and equipment for the street department. Engineer Ken McDonald estimated 5300 to recondition sections in Gibraltar Manor Southwest Village and Scottsdale Village west of downtown. He sought an industrial tractor with front end loader. budgeted 6000 justified by avoiding rental fees.
President Kennedy convened a high level White House meeting with Dean Rusk Robert McNamara and General Lemnitzer to discuss Southeast Asia. Officials would not disclose topics but sources link it to SEATO advisers reports on Laos and South Vietnam and possible deployment plans in Thailand.
The Scottsdale City Council granted the Elks Lodge a use permit to host picnics and dances on an 8% acre tract at 64th Street and Oak. Neighbors protested while lodge representative Lester Kilpatrick argued the project would lift nearby property values.
