Insects as Food Put Forward by Mexican Biologist
Mexican biologist Raul MacGregor Loeza of the National University of Mexico argues insects could be cultivated in large quantities for human consumption. He notes Mexicans already eat several insect varieties including the fat white worm from the maguey cactus with 16 percent protein, and the ahuatle water bug at 63.8 percent protein. The jumil, a herbivorous bedbug, is cited as a folk remedy for rheumatism and teething pains if eaten alive. Local ants are mentioned as ingredients in tamales or fried dishes with perceived aphrodisiac effects.
