Tom Cochran, assistant city manager since 1963, finishes duties in Scottsdale and departs for Atwater California to assume city manager duties starting October 17. He recalls a rapid early period, the 1963 64 budget, annexation growth, and the airport survey project as highlights.
An Indianapolis mother sues a public school teacher and others for 7500 dollars claiming 8 year old Dennis Tibbs suffered ulcers and restricted diet after being made to hold soap chips in his mouth for up to a half hour as punishment. The incident reportedly occurred April 21 at Public School 68 and allegedly occurred twice more.
The Phoenix Symphony Orchestra schedules eight one hour concerts at Scottsdale high schools this fall starting November 29. Dr. C. B. Smith announces sessions target high school students with as many elementary pupils as possible allowed. Concerts will be at Scottsdale High on November 29, Coronado High on December 6, Saguaro High on December 8, and Arcadia High on December 13, with a preview rehearsal for elementary instrumental students and parents on November 28.
Scottsdale party members open a victory headquarters at 7155 E. Thomas Rd to organize support for Democratic candidates in Districts 8C and 8D. Edna Scott and Larry Bell chair the two districts and will staff the volunteer operation.
Scottsdale prepares to join a five city sewage line with city engineer Ken McDonald saying link up is timely. The project cost Scottsdale about 1.8 million for its portion of the 13 million line carrying sewage from Mesa Tempe Phoenix and Scottsdale to a treatment plant near 91st Avenue. Glendale also links to the plant via its own line.
In Frankfort, John Young Brown and John Sherman Cooper resume a Kentucky Senate race dynamic from 20 years ago. Cooper, a liberal incumbent, contrasts Brown as a tough campaigner attacking Viet Nam policy and inflation. Republicans eye gains in three of seven Kentucky seats with district battles in the Third and Fourth Districts.
U S Defense Secretary Robert S McNamara plans a Sunday visit to Saigon to review the escalating Viet Nam war. Since his last trip 11 months ago American troops rose from 170000 to 316000 and the U S death toll climbed from about 2000 to over 5400. Military leaders are likely to urge sending more combat units to bolster Viet Nam defense lines, including the vast Mekong Delta.
Washington columnist notes Lynda Bird Johnson accept ed a McCall's post with pay under 10 000 a year as White House ties and magazine choice prompt discussion. He cites Brinkley remarks on women's roles and hints at subscription pressure and cultural expectations amid the Johnson family profile.
