Viet Cong guerrillas engaged near Hau Nghia Province killing at least three American crew and destroying a UH-1B helicopter while another helicopter was damaged but escaped. Government forces reportedly suffered heavy casualties with about 30 troops killed and 26 wounded.
First Lady Lady Bird Johnson toured industrial Piedmont North Carolina and Virginia regions aboard the Lady Bird Special stressing education and southern heritage. about 8 000 greeted her in Durham as the train moved from Raleigh for 12 stops from Raleigh to Charleston with John L McMillan later joining in South Carolina. She spoke at Greensboro University of North Carolina campus urging students their generation to build a society of the highest order while noting prosperity is shared in North Carolina.
At the council meeting neighbors opposed a 10 acre rezoning from Rt-7 residential to -3 commercial on 8148 E Thomas Rd. Joseph P. Smalley proposed the change for a trailer court for adults, but residents argued against it due to surrounding single family homes. Council denied the request and deferred other rezonings.
City council formalizes a long standing ban on construction within the Indian Bend Wash floodway citing hazard and liability concerns. Exceptions exist for fills to 40 000 cfs limits golf courses parks and cultivated areas while preserving channel integrity.
