Berets and Vietnamese repel large four wave attack

UPI reports Green Berets with Vietnamese allies repelled a four wave assault 66 miles northwest of Saigon amid tank tracks and bombardment. In the fighting 150 of North Vietnam 8th Division were reported killed, one US helicopter downed, with 4 Americans and 38 irregulars wounded. Nearby heavy bombardment by B52s and field guns followed. A later collision of a Caribou transport and an Army helicopter killed 24 Americans. The New Jersey bombarded southern North Vietnam destroying multiple targets.

Obituary of Charles R. Ballew in Scottsdale

Charles Robert Ballew 34 of 5601 Calle del Paisano died Thursday. He led First Texas Corp and Investors United Life Insurance Co and was born in Vernon Texas. He studied at North Texas State University and belonged to Kappa Alpha. Survived by wife Virginia a son Charlie and daughters Carol Christie all of Scottsdale and parents Mr and Mrs Charles Everett Ballew of Vernon. Services 11 a.m. Saturday at Messinger Mortuary with interment in Vernon Texas.

Sirhan Sirhan seeks postholiday trial delay in Kennedy case

Defense attorney Russell Parsons asked Superior Court Judge Richard Schauer to postpone the Sirhan B. Sirhan murder trial until after the New Year to avoid sequestering jurors during Christmas and New Year. The judge set October 14 for a hearing on the motion as Sirhan, 24, appeared briefly with his mother and brother in Los Angeles. Judge Herbert V. Walker is to hear arguments on sequestering the jury for the anticipated two month trial.

Motorola accuses Fairchild in bid over employee rights

Motorola and eight former executives accuse Fairchild of pirating top leaders and claim Motorola seeks to bar employees from changing jobs. C Lester Hogan and seven aides say the suit would force involuntary servitude and deny trade secret claims while denying sharing confidential work. Pistol Stolen in Scottsdale Burglaries

A .44 caliber magnum pistol was taken from Mike V. Carroll’s home at 8732 E. Vista Dr. A second burglary on Merle D. Craven’s property at 519 Orange Blossom involved prying open a door and taking four cartons of cigarettes. Police reported the total loss at $105 including ammunition, camera, and jewelry.

Lightning Strikes Cause Power Outage In Scottsdale

Lightning hit two poles in Scottsdale Thursday causing a citywide power outage from 62nd to 80th Street between Thomas Road and the Arizona Canal. Restored by 117 p.m. and again by 6:46 p.m. no fires. crews fixed damaged transformers and traffic signals near the area.

Surviving sextuplets seen by Birmingham mother

Mrs Sheila Thorns met her five surviving sextuplets at Birmingham Maternity Hospital for the first time since their birth. Doctors reported the five in frail but improving condition and receiving breast milk seeds while a seventh baby died after birth.

Scottsdale deputy promoted to Paradise Valley lieutenant

Lt Richard D. Kaar 36 of Scottsdale has been promoted to lieutenant on the Paradise Valley town marshal's staff. He will lead the deputy marshals reporting to Marshal Lester Naumann. Kaar, living at 8207 E Sells Drive, joined the town force three years ago after six years with Scottsdale police.

Mayors golf for cerebral palsy fund at Valley event

Mayors Bud Tints Milt Graham and officials from Tempe Mesa and Glendale will drive a golf ball three times each at Century Country Club. The longest drive earns $1 a yard for the United Cerebral Palsy Fund. Reyco Drug Co sponsors the first annual event marking its Valley grand opening. Glenn McMinn will oversee as the club pro officiates.
