First Arizona irrigation project ends in failure
Historical Sidelights recounts the first Congress irrigation appropriation of 1867 for the Colorado River Indian Reservation. The $50,000 funds arrived late, canals were dug by about 300 Mohave Indians, tunnels through Headgate Rock failed, and by 1876 the project was abandoned as a costly misstep despite ambitious extension efforts and later lessons.
